...the scenery started to pick up once in spain

I left Zurich after a few days and headed across towards Spain and Madrid. Nothing much of interest happened and I was in a bit of a hurry so didn't stop anywhere. Also, with very limited funds europe seemed expensive and I knew Morocco was much cheaper.

Chris Scott the author of "Sahara Overland" had asked to tag along with me in Morocco to update the routes for the new edition of his book. It seemed like a sound idea to take the guidebook author as well as the guidebook, so I agreed, and thus was driving like a maniac to get to Malaga to meet his flight from London.

First though I had to get to Madrid and get a visa for Mauritania as Chris had a whiff of being able to get into northern Mauritania from southern Morocco.

using the back roads to avoid the motorways...

Spanish truck drivers didn't take kindly to having a sexy green landy in the slow lane doing 85km p/h so I retreated to the back roads which worked out best for everybody except those stuck behind me at hills (no turbo so very slow up hills).

only 251km to madrid...

After 2 days of solid driving I got close to Madrid and parked up for the night in a services area with 30 odd trucks and a lady in a mini-skirt who had picked an unusual place to wear high-heels.
